This hurricane moved over downtown Miami in the early morning of September 18, 1926. The category 4 hurricane, which had maximum wind speeds of 140-150 mph, surprised many people who had no idea the storm was near. There had only been a few reports from boats out at sea of a massive storm. The 10 foot storm surge completely flooded Miami Beach and reached several blocks into downtown Miami. There were 372 people who were killed and more than 6000 casualties as a result of the hurricane. The estimated damage costs in 1926 were around $150 million, anywhere from $140 billion to $160 billion in today’s dollars. (information courtesy of NOAA)
