December 24, 1989 Nor'easter

The storm resulted in the first white Christmas of record from northeastern Florida to North Carolina.  States as far south as Alabama also received a measurable amount of snow. Off the coast, the wave height recorded at this point in time was the largest during this year’s nor’easter season. A category 5 on the Dolan-Davis Scale, this stormed produced waves as high as 10.7 meters. A total of 137 cities across the central and eastern U.S. reported record low temperatures (Charlie Wilson, examiner.com).

The Blizzard of ‘89 dropped snow across the entire Atlantic seaboard. This photo from Boaz, Alabama, shows that even the deep South received their first white Christmas on record.
